Internet Web Search Engines, Web Site Advice & Tools
Google According to the 2005 Neilsen NetRatings - the most popular search engine used for over 48% of all web searches in the US.
Google is the top choice world-wide for both work and home searching because it provides both comprehensive coverage and high relevance results from it's massive crawler based database of web pages.
Google was originally a Stanford University project by students Larry Page and Sergey Brin. In 1998, they changed the name to Google and it became a private company and still is today.
Yahoo A large searchable directory of over 1 million Web Sites. Yahoo is primarily designed for searching by topic category but also provides  keyword and phrase searching.  Yahoo started in 1994 and unlike other web searching tools was based on human editors who organised the web sites into categories.
Yahoo still remains the second most popular search engine in the World (22% of all web searches in the US - Neilsen Netratings 2005) possibly due to it's longevity and the fact that some people still prefer to search by category.
MSN Search The last of the "big-three" is MSN Search from Microsoft (12% of all web searches in the US - Neilsen Netratings 2005) . This is a mixture of crawler based results (from the LookSmart directory) and a human touch from the MSN editors who pick popular sites and then list these as "Popular Topics" at the end of the results listings.
